The camera is only as good as its mount. A $400 camera on two drywall screws will fail. This guide covers every exterior surface with the right hardware, drill bits, sealants, and structural principles so your install lasts 10+ years.
Golden Rule Anchor to structure, not skin. Screws into vinyl, stucco, or thin soffit without hitting a stud/rafter = future failure. Find the wood/metal behind the cladding.
Mounting Hardware Quick Reference
Surface-Specific Mounting
1. Wood Siding / Trim / Fascia (Easiest — Direct to Stud)
Tools: Stud finder, ⅛" drill bit, #10 × 2.5" coated deck screws, level
2. Vinyl / Aluminum Siding (Use a Mounting Block)
Never drive screws through vinyl siding into sheathing only. Wind load + camera weight = ripped-out siding in first storm.
Solution: Vinyl Siding Mounting Block (J-Channel Compatible)
Install:
- Remove siding panel (unlock J-channel with zip tool)
- Position block over sheathing, centered on stud
- Screw block to sheathing/stud — #8 × 1.5" screws (4 corners)
- Re-install siding — snaps over block flange
- Mount camera bracket to block — #8 × 1" screws
Alternative (no block): 3M VHB 5952 Tape + 1 screw to stud (hybrid). Clean with IPA, press 30 sec, add one structural screw.
3. Stucco / Brick / Concrete / Masonry
Tools: Hammer drill (SDS+ rotary hammer best), masonry bits, Tapcon/sleeve anchors, shop vac
Stucco Specific: Drill through stucco into wood sheathing/stud if possible (longer Tapcon 3"). If solid masonry behind, use sleeve anchor. Never rely on stucco alone — it crumbles.
4. Hardie Board / Fiber Cement / LP SmartSide
- Pre-drill ⅛" pilot at every screw (prevents cracking)
- Screw to stud — #10 × 2.5" coated, 16" OC max
- Caulk heads — Paintable acrylic latex (matches siding)
- Avoid driving near edges (1" minimum from edge)
5. Soffit / Eave Mounts (Best for Overhead Coverage)
Soffit Mount (Horizontal Surface):
- Bracket: Right-angle bracket with base plate (4" × 4" min)
- Fastener: Lag bolt ⅜" × 3" into rafter tail (not soffit panel!)
- Find rafter: Drill ¼" exploratory hole through soffit → feel for wood
- Seal: Butyl tape under bracket base + silicone around bolts
Eave / Fascia Mount (Vertical Face):
- Direct to fascia board (usually 2×) — #10 × 3" deck screws or ⅜" lag bolts
- Or: Rafter tail through soffit (see above)
- Angle bracket if camera needs tilt down
Eave mount = best weather protection + optimal angle. Camera looks down 20–30°, covered by roof overhang. Use right-angle bracket + 3" lag into rafter tail.
6. Pole Mount (Driveway, Gate, Perimeter)
Pole Spec: 1.5" or 2" Schedule 40 steel pipe (not fence top rail)
Footing:
- Depth: 18–24" (frost line + 6")
- Diameter: 8–10" (Sonotube or direct pour)
- Concrete: 5000 psi mix, 2–3 bags per hole
- Rebar: 2× #4 vertical, tied
- Conduit: ¾" PVC sweep up inside pole for cable
Camera Bracket: U-bolt pole mount (adjustable tilt/pan)
- Stainless U-bolts + nylon lock nuts
- Level bracket before final tighten
Grounding (NEC 250.52):
- #6 CU solid from pole base to ground rod (8' copper-clad)
- Bond camera bracket to pole with #10 CU jumper
7. Tree / Wooden Post Mount
- Stainless steel strap (Band-It, ¾" × 0.030") + buckle
- Or: ⅜" × 4" lag shield + lag bolt into post heartwood
- Allow movement: Camera on articulating arm (not rigid) — trees sway
- Inspect annually — tighten strap, check lag
Cable Entry & Weatherproofing
Drip Loop: Always form 6" loop below entry point — water runs down cable, drips off loop, not into hole.
Structural Engineering Basics (Don't Skip)
Wind Load: 4 lb camera + 6" arm @ 90 mph = ~35 lb moment at fastener.
Leverage: Every inch of bracket extension multiplies force.
Fastener Spacing Rules:
- Lag bolts: 3" min embed, 2 per bracket minimum
- Tapcons: 4" OC max, 1.5" edge distance
- Screws to studs: 2 per bracket leg, 16" OC if multiple brackets
Pull-Out Values (lb) — Typical:
Design for 4× safety factor. If camera + bracket = 5 lb, mount must hold 20+ lb per fastener.
Code & Permit Checklist
- NEC 300.4 — Cable protection (1.25" from edge, conduit if <1.25")
- NEC 410.10 — Luminaire (camera) support — listed for weight
- NEC 250 — Grounding metal poles, boxes, conduits
- IRC R302 — Fireblocking at penetrations (caulk or mineral wool)
- Local permit — Many jurisdictions: >$500 or >6 ft height = permit
- HOA approval — Submit photos + specs before drill
