Cable Choice Use solid copper Cat6 (CMR/CMP). Not CCA (copper-clad aluminum). Not stranded. Not Cat5e for new runs. Solid copper Cat6 = 100m at 1Gbps PoE+ without voltage drop issues.
Cable Selection: What to Buy (And Avoid)
CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminum) fails at PoE. Aluminum has 60% higher resistance → voltage drop → camera reboots at night (IR on). Verify "Solid Bare Copper" on jacket print.

Attic to Soffit (Most Common)
Basement/Crawl to Exterior Wall
- Drill through rim joist (not foundation) — ⅞" hole, 12" above grade minimum
- Fireblock: Stuff mineral wool + fire caulk around cable at penetration
- Exterior: LB conduit body → ½" LFMC to camera box
Interior Wall to Exterior (Retrofit)
- Cut old-work box hole at camera height (inside)
- Drill down through bottom plate into basement/crawl (⅞" auger)
- Fish up from basement with glow rods
- Protect: Nail plates on studs where cable passes (NEC 300.4)
Conduit & Protection
Termination: RJ45 Pass-Through (Fastest, Most Reliable)
Use pass-through connectors. Standard RJ45 requires precise trim. Pass-through lets you verify color order before crimp. Tool: Ratcheting pass-through crimper (Klein VDV226-110, $45).
T568B Pinout (Standard for PoE)
PoE uses ALL 4 pairs (802.3bt). All 8 conductors must be perfect.
Crimp Procedure (Pass-Through)
- Strip 1.5" jacket — don't nick conductors
- Untwist pairs only as needed — keep twists close to connector
- Arrange T568B — fan flat, verify order left-to-right
- Insert fully — conductors visible at front face
- Verify order — look through clear connector
- Crimp — ratchet tool, one firm squeeze
- Tug test — 5 lb pull, no movement
Keystone Jacks (Wall Plate Termination)
When: Camera connects to patch panel / wall jack → patch cable to camera
Punch-Down (110/Keystone):
- Strip 2" jacket
- Seat wires in color-coded slots (T568B printed on jack)
- Punch straight down — 110 tool, one strike per wire
- Trim excess flush
- Snap into wall plate
