2MP vs 4MP is the budget-versus-detail question every CCTV buyer faces. 2MP (1080p) is the long-standing default: cheap, light on storage, and good enough for close indoor views. 4MP (1440p) roughly doubles the pixel count and is quickly becoming the new baseline for outdoor and entrance cameras. Here is how to decide.
The quick answer
Default to 4MP for anything outdoors or covering a pathway, and reserve 2MP for small, close, well-lit indoor spaces.
Detail and identification distance
2MP captures about 2.1 million pixels; 4MP about 4.1 million. Under DORI standards with a typical 4mm lens, a 2MP camera identifies a face at roughly 15-25 feet, while a 4MP camera pushes that to about 20-35 feet. If your camera watches a driveway, gate, or aisle where subjects stand 20+ feet away, 4MP is the meaningful upgrade.
Low-light performance
More megapixels are not automatically better at night. On a smaller sensor, 2MP pixels are physically larger and gather more light, so a quality Starlight 2MP camera can out-shoot a basic 4MP camera in darkness. If night performance is the priority in a dim indoor area, a Starlight 2MP model is often the smarter buy than a cheap 4MP.
Storage, bandwidth, and cost
4MP records about 30-40% more data than 2MP:
- 2MP continuous (H.265): ~10-15 GB/day per camera.
- 4MP continuous (H.265): ~18-28 GB/day per camera.
Across a large system this adds up, but the per-camera price gap between 2MP and 4MP is now small. For most installs, spend the little extra on 4MP outdoors and save with 2MP indoors.
A mixed-resolution strategy
You do not have to pick one. Modern NVRs mix resolutions freely, and a zone-based plan is the best practice:
- Entrances, driveways, perimeters: 4MP for identification-grade detail.
- Retail floors, open offices: 4MP for wider coverage.
- Hallways, small rooms, stairwells: 2MP to save storage where close range is fine.
